Reports over the past few months indicated that Samsung’s upcoming Exynos 1000 would be a monumental shift, with the company ditching its custom Mongoose cores and replacing ARM’s Mali GPU with new architecture from AMD. Apparently, those rumors were wrong.
According to tipster Ice Universe, the Exynos 1000 will not feature a GPU made by AMD. Ice Universe is usually accurate with Samsung-specific information, so it’s unlikely this is wrong. Supposedly, the Exynos 1000 will continue with ARM’s Mali for the last time, and will be equipped with G78 cores. Samsung’s flagship SoC for 2022 is expected to sport the custom AMD GPU cores, however.
The Exynos 990 was universally panned for its poor implementation on the Galaxy S20 series and it remains to be seen how the Exynos 1000 will stack up to the Snapdragon 875, especially now that it’s all but guaranteed to offer worse GPU performance. The CPU side of things should be more interesting, however, assuming Samsung really does replace the Mongoose cores with a more efficient alternative—perhaps the new Cortex-X1 cores?
