Obesity an epidemic and its elemination.

Prof. Farrukh Hussain

First of all awareness and understanding of the reasons of obesity and how to prevent it is the best solution to fight the obesity epidemic.
The current obesity epidemic is mostly explained by an increase in caloric intake instead of less or even lack of exercise.
A current study and survey on how getting sufficient sleep affects caloric intake or calories in a real world and lifestyle could change is how we think about weight loss and reduction.
Currently in a survey driven to an experiment with around 90 people (adults)found that young, Over weight adults who habitually slept fewer than 6.5 hours a night were able to increase their sleep duration by an average of 1.2 hours per night later the sleep factor was increased and the time in bed came out to be 8.5 hours which comparatively reduced the overall caloric intake (calories) by an average of 270 Kcal (calories) per day. Over the years, we and the others studies have shown that sleep restrictions has an effect on eppetite regulation that takes to increased or more food intake or eating and puts you at risk for weight gain or increase over the time.
Then the question arises.
Well, if this is what happens with sleep loss, can we extend or increase sleep and reverse or turn around some of these negative and adverse results and out comes?.
It is noted overall, individuals who increased their sleep duration were able to reduce their caloric (calories) intake by an average of 270 Kcal per day – which would be roughly 12Kg, or 26 lbs., of weight loss or reduction over two years if the effects are maintained for a longer period.
Caloric intake or the food eaten is less than calories burned. If healthy sleep habits are maintained over longer duration, this would lead to clinically important weight loss over time. Many people are working hard to find ways to decrease their caloric intake to lose weight.
-well, just by sleeping more, you may be able to reduce it substantially.
I hope larger studies on weight control to determine if extending sleep can support weight- loss programs and help prevent or reduce or reverse obesity.
God bless everyone.
